We’re into January. Surely your goals are made for the New Year’s. You’re determination is strong, motivation is high, and you’re just ready to kick some tush, and actually finish a book, lose some weight, and just get that agent contract or book contract you’ve been working on for years.
Then every time you sit down at the computer, someone calls you, your phone is going off, kids need something, laundry needs to be done, you wake up too late to workout, you have to go to the grocery, or your mother or someone needs you to help them, and you end up dropping yourself.
Balancing Life and Writing isn’t easy at all.
Selfish to say, you need to make time for yourself. You need to make your number ONE priority to be YOURSELF. No, I’m not saying to just ditch all your responsibilities just because you really really want to accomplish these goals you set out for yourself, but you need to organize time and put yourself on a schedule. Make time to relax. Enjoy dinner. Hang out with friends. Shoot. If you really want to go drink, I’m going to tell you to go drink. Have lots of cocktails! Okay, keep it under control now…
I think my number one goal this year to keep my sanity. Lol.
But really, there needs to be a balance.
Well, with this New Year, I propose to give myself smaller goals so I know to get things done. But this year, instead of putting everyone else before me, I need to make more time for myself to write.
Here’s a sample of my new typical day:
11 AM: Wake up, check email, drink coffee. (Hey, I’m not a morning person!)
Noon: Have breakfast
12:30 More coffee, edit for a few hours.
3 PM Run errands
5 PM Dinner and cleanup
7 PM Edit some more.
9 PM Write
Midnight: Sleep
That’s three hours of writing time for me! That’s just a very loose schedule but I usually change it around depending on the day of the week.
What does your routine look like?

These are some good points. When I used to teach single parenting classes, I always told people that they need to take care of themselves so that there would be enough leftover to take care of their family and responsibilities.
ReplyDeleteGood luck on the new schedule!
