Blog Tour Guest Blog: CJ Ellisson

Been There, Done That… Written About It?
CJ Ellisson

I think this is an especially fun topic to write about on a blog that caters to adult books and here’s why—I love sex, but I haven’t done everything I’ve written about. Nor have I written about everything that I’ve done.

I’m a pretty adventurous and ballsy chick. I’ve surprised boyfriends wearing nothing but a trench coat, thigh high stockings and high heels. I’ve gone to dinner panty-less and not made it to dessert. I’ve done things in movie theaters you could get arrested for. I’ve had sex in public bathrooms, on trains, in parks…. Well, you get the idea, I don’t back down from much. At least that was true in my younger and childfree years.

Now I’m much more staid in the places I like to indulge my carnal desires, and the most erotic moments of my life happen with my husband behind our locked bedroom doors. And with good reason—my current exploits with him rival every adventure I tried in my youth!

But does that mean I’ve had a threesome? Nope. Have I been with a girl? Nope. Have I had a ball gag inserted in my mouth? No matter how many times my husband may have wished for that one outside of the bedroom, alas, no, I haven’t had the desire to try one. Will I do any of those wild things? Probably not. But does that mean I can’t write about them?

Absolutely not! Do you think writers who write science fiction have journeyed on the starship Enterprise? Hardly. Has the woman penning the latest detective sleuth ever sat on a stakeout or chased down a lead like a cop? Maybe, who knows. But I doubt most of them are actual private investigators with a license to carry a concealed weapon.

Does that mean they can’t write about such fantasies and adventures? And can’t the same be said about erotica writers? I think it can. As long as they research a topic well and can suspend disbelief in the reader for a few hours, their job is done.

Don’t get me wrong, I think there’s something a little off with women writing male on male erotica if she’s never had anal sex. I mean, that’s stretching even my boundaries of “willingness to suspend disbelief”. She has neither the parts nor has engaged in any of the acts? How can it possibly be accurate?

That is, of course, one of my own pet peeves. I’ve edited anal sex pieces for writers who have clearly never engaged in the act and I think a well-experienced reader will know the difference, too. But, (no pun intended) I’ve also met some phenomenal writers who can write the scenes and they make me think, “Damn, that was hot…. Wonder if they’ve done that?”

Our job as writers is to bring the reader into the moment. I’ve been lucky enough to have readers email to me and say, “I love your work so much because you write real sex scenes.” A few of them go on and tell me how I inspired last night’s fun. Sometimes those emails weird me out a bit, but as long as they don’t include graphic details I’m cool with it.

Have I done everything I’ve written about in such glorious detail? Nope, but I’ve done a hell of a lot of it, and damn, it’s fun!

If you’d like to try some of my scorching hot erotica (that has very little plot), then please check out Red Hot Readers on Facebook. Where I, along with two-dozen other writers, are currently giving away over 4,000 ebooks in exchange for a simple email address. Here’s a hint, the hot stuff is on the Erotica tab in the genre section ;-) LOL!

Thanks for having me here today.
