Do nice guys always finish last? In the new Extreme Risk novel from New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Tracy Wolff, a burnt-out underdog and a vulnerable tomboy defy the pressure to be perfect and go after what they really want.Bighearted and easygoing, Luc Jennings is falling behind in a family of serious overachievers. While he may be decent enough at snowboarding to turn pro and rack up some sponsors, he’s never topped any podiumsβ€”unlike his friends Z, Ash, and Cam. Luc’s always been head over heels for Cam Bradley, but she’s never seen him as anything more than a friend. Now, after years of coming in second, Luc can’t take it anymoreβ€”especially if it means watching Cam chase another guy.Cam hangs out almost exclusively with dudes, and that’s fine by her. She’d much rather be shredding at the Olympics than primping in the mirror. Cam’s wildest dreams have a way of coming trueβ€”except when it comes to getting her longtime crush and best friend, Z Michaels, to notice her. Then her mother suddenly shows up after being gone for, like, ever, and Cam’s whole world comes crashing down. Desperate for a place to lay low, she turns to the one person who’s always had her back.

I have read all the Extreme Risks books and this one was a bit disappointing. I have been waiting for Cam and Luc’s story through the other two books. Β Their story was simmering in the background and it seemed to have the makings of a really good best friends to lover story. Β It started out where we left off…these two were drunk and slept together. Β Cam didn’t handle the morning after well and disappeared. Β Luc, who constantly thinks he plays second, third, even forth best to this best friends is beyond hurt but plays it off. Β He doesn’t do a stellar job as he ignores Cam and their friendship suffers.

The best part of this book is seeing these two come around even after hurting each other. Β It seemed real and the miscommunication was endless but they inherently love each other. Β They want to fix their relationship and even move it to the next level. Β The secondary storylines of Luc playng second fiddle to all of his buddies in snowboarding and Cam’s mom reappearing after leaving when she is a child aren’t explored enough but had the potential to be powerful storylines. Β Also, the ending and HEA was rushed and so much more detail could have been provided. Β This book left me wanting more but it was still an enjoyable read.
