He’d walk through fire for the doctor who once broke his heartSix months after having his heart broken, Australian firefighter Flynn Boomer is ready to live again. As part of a firefighter exchange program, he finds himself in New York. The last person he expects to see on his first day with Ladder Co. 42 is the man whom Flynn came out for: Dr. David Ennisβ€”who left him without a word after their first public kiss.Flynn makes David feel more alive, more real than he’s ever felt before. But can David deal with the rest of the world knowing? Determined to deny Flynn’s existence, David fights his own feelings. But no matter how terrified he is at the thought of his secret being discovered, he can’t stay away from the Australian.Flynn can no more deny David than he can deny breath, but the thought of living a lie with him tears him apart. Love is powerful, but will it be enough?

What’s sexier than a firefighter and a doctor? Honestly? Not much. This was my first book by this particular author and I have to be honest, I couldn’t have done better. I absolutely loved the characters. The fact that they were what some would call men’s men made it a bit more enjoyable me. It would be difficult to envision a firefighter as being effeminate, even a gay one, since they are so often portrayed as big, muscular, burly men. As such a big macho firefighter who can pass as straight with an inner struggle was great.

Cooper gave us a sweet romance that can easily translate to straight characters. The inner struggle of loving the wrong person, of loving someone who cannot, for whatever reason love you back is one that may resonate with many. Straight or gay, Can’t Stay Away speaks to the inner romantic in all of us, who, if we are to be truthful, are suckers for second chances. The fact that Flynn was willing to give David a second chance, after David walked away from him with no explanation, says a lot about his strength of character and the kind of person he is.

Start to finish, it was a great story. This is not to say that there weren’t a couple of β€œAre you kidding me?!” moments. I won’t go in to detail as I wouldn’t want to post any spoilers. However, you’ll see them for yourself when you read the book. Some things make for a good story arc, even if in a real situation our handsome firefighter would have found himself fired and shipped home. The secondary characters were well written and memorable. I hope to read more about them in the future.
