After reading the Friend Zone, the second book in the Game On series, I was excited to see what would come next and Ms. Callihan did not disappoint with this, the third installment.
The Game Plan picks up a couple of years after the The Friend Zone and follows Fi and Dex, both of whom were secondary characters in the previous book. Fi and Dex are visiting Ivy and Gray (her sister and his best friend) at the same time when they finally connect romantically. The connection is intense, but plagued with problems as they live in different cities and she is afraid of dating professional athletes.
Both Fi and Dex are fun characters to watch. They are dealing with issues and insecurities that you wouldn’t expect from people who seem to have charmed lives. It was interesting to watch them battle these insecurities and see how other people in their lives played into things as they made decisions to move the relationship along.
The Game Plan is well written and enjoyable. I liked Fi and Dex, especially the idea that someone in such an Alpha male job could also be so sensitive and devoted. The drawback for me was that some of the drama seemed manufactured. Professional athletes lead interesting lives that are frequently intruded on by the public, but the level this was taken to seemed extreme. There were also a couple of characters introduced who didn’t seem to really have a purpose.
Overall, I liked The Game Plan and am curious to see where Ms. Callihan will take the series next.
