three-half-stars

From the New York Times bestselling author of Sweet Ache comes a blistering new novel filled with danger, secrecy, and a desire that can’t be sated…
Foreign war correspondent Tanner Thomas is addicted to living on the edge. Needing the adrenaline rush of his job to help him cope with a personal loss, he throws himself back into the game, concentrating all his energy on getting the next big story.
But when he meets his new photojournalist, Beaux Croslyn, he can’t help but feel like he’s losing his focusβ€”and maybe risking more…
With secrets she won’t address, Beaux is far from your ordinary woman. Determined to keep her distance, she’s willing to pull Tanner in closer and hide behind the sparks flying between them. But as Beaux’s past begins to put their relationshipβ€”and their livesβ€”at risk, Tanner’s determination to find the truth puts them both in jeopardy.
He's ready to chase her to the ends of the earth to find out if what they had was real, or if the danger surrounding them was just an exquisite heat fated to burn out…

HARD BEAT is the seventh book in the Driven series and is a standalone.Β  This story is about Tanner Thomas, a foreign war correspondent.Β  Tanner is a smart, tough, handsome adrenaline junkie and even though he has not recovered from a recent tragedy, he insists on returning to work in the Middle East. Β Working is the only way Tanner knows how to deal with all the emotions he is feeling.Β  It is in the war torn Middle East Tanner meets Beaux Croslyn.

Beaux is a woman with many secrets and Tanner’s new photographer.Β  From the moment they meet there is a constant push and pull between them with lots of verbal foreplay.Β  Beaux is feisty and tough; she can hold her own and doesn’t let Tanner get away with anything. Β Tanner is protective and attracted to Beaux and he is also frustrated with her because he doesn’t understand why she so secretive. There is a lot of sexual tension between Tanner and Beaux but they both hold back and are afraid of what they are feeling. Β I admire Beaux.Β  It takes a lot guts for a woman to work in the Middle East, although I didn’t understand her motives for being so tight lipped.

This story is told from the male POV.Β  So I understood Tanner but I did not know what Beaux was feeling or thinking, so I never connected with Beaux. My favorite parts of the book were the relationships between all the reporters on assignment in the Middle East.Β  They all hang out together and drink and play games to pass the time in their hotel, as they wait for something to happen and hope to be the first to get the story.Β  This book is filled with tension and unexpected twists and turns and is completely different from the rest of the Driven series. Overall I liked the story, but I had a hard time connecting with the characters, especially Beaux.
