Wake up and feel the wood! In the first of a series of irresistible standalone romances from New York Times bestselling author Sawyer Bennett, a city girl rediscovers love and lust in the Alaskan wilderness.   Valentine French may be the sassiest dating columnist in New York City, but the abundance of metrosexuals in her adopted metropolis is seriously cramping her style. Where are the beefy all-American boys? Hoping to find some inspiration, Val heads to Alaska, where the men outnumber the women fifteen to one and wrestle grizzly bears for sport. Or so she can only imagine. Suddenly the most eligible bachelorette in a town full of horny lumberjacks, Val is writing her best columns ever. But if she doesn’t get her nose out of her laptop, she just might miss out on Mr. Right.   Logan Burke is the sheriff of the little podunk town that Val finds so charmingly backward. He’s not that different from the guys she’s using for her little experiment; it’s just that one date would never be enough for Logan. As he listens to Val complain about love over beers in the local tavern, he realizes that she can’t see the forest for the trees. Because if she would ever give up her Prada bags and fourteen-dollar martinis, Logan would give her the only luxury that matters: his heart.  Don’t miss any of Sawyer Bennett’s smoldering novels:  The Sugar Bowl seriesSUGAR DADDY | SUGAR RUSH | SUGAR FREE “This book devastated me in the most wonderful way.”—#1 New York Times bestselling author Meredith Wild, on Sugar Daddy The Cold Fury Hockey seriesALEX | GARRETT | ZACK | RYKER | HAWKE | MAX | ROMAN “Sawyer Bennett never fails to deliver heroes I fall hard for and heroines I adore.”New York Times bestselling author Violet Duke  This standalone novel includes an excerpt from another Loveswept title.

City girl versus Alaska.  An interesting premise and one that I was looking forward to.

Valentine French lived in NYC off her trust fund, shopped like it was an Olympic sport and wrote a popular blog about dating and being single (much to the chagrin of her family).  And when she finds herself down with her dating life, she lets her cousin book her on an open-ended trip to Alaska to see if those Alaskan men are better that what she was used to.  Of course, nothing goes the way Valentine envisions but it may just lead her to Mr. Right after all.

This book and I fought a little as I read it.  I loved Logan Burke.  He was the hot cop who loved his life in Alaska, yet refused to settle down with any one of the willing women throwing themselves at him.  So I didn’t really see what the attraction was to Valentine, other than she was beautiful, that kept him seeking her out.  I got it after awhile, but I just couldn’t see Logan with Valentine long term.

There were times when I found myself exasperated with the characters.  Why did Valentine once again find herself in a mess (she was a modern day Lucille Ball with some of the things she got herself into).  Why did Logan keep rescuing her?  Why didn’t either of them consider something long-term, even if they both though Valentine was going to eventually leave?  Why was Logan so quick to believe someone else about Valentine instead of asking her himself?  These things bothered me and ended up making this a book I simply liked, rather than loved.

The story was cute and I did find myself laughing out loud at some parts, but the frustration I felt with these characters far exceeded the goodness.  Others will love this book, but I found myself asking why they were together rather than hoping they figured things out.

When not bringing fictional romance to life, Sawyer is a chauffeur, stylist, chef, maid, and personal assistant to a very active toddler, as well as full-time servant to two adorably naughty dogs. She believes in the good of others, and that a bad day can be cured with a great work-out, cake, or a combination of the two.
