Ms. Jacobs takes us back to small town Michigan in this second installment at the Checkerberry Inn. This time we are becoming better acquainted with Masterson cousin, Miles. The Miles we see here is a little different from the man I remember meeting in the first Checkerberry Inn book, but that may just be an issue of him being a more fully developed character here.
His love interest, Stephanie, is a childhood friend turned college crush turned the girl who got away. Stephanie has recently had her world turned upside down and is coming home to Michigan to find herself and interview for a new job.
One of the things I liked about this story is that Miles and Stephanie’s reconnection wasn’t perfect and it wasn’t instant. They both had issues to work through and they seemed to help each other do that with some mild interference from family and friends.
Both characters experienced emotional growth as they worked through their issues towards the things they thought would make them happy. I also appreciated that the relationship conflict wasn’t just drama for the sake of drama, it really was an issue of people thinking they were in different places in their lives and doing what was best for themselves.
Her Unexpected Engagement is a well written, enjoyable book. The characters are entertaining and the situations fairly realistic.
