Phoenix /fēniks/: (in classical mythology) a unique bird inhabiting the Arabian Desert that burned itself on a funeral pyre before rising from the ashes with renewed youth to live through another cycle.
This isn’t mythology, it’s war, and Hendy is left in the hands of Hell’s cruelest gatekeepers.
His team is killed before his very eyes, and despite his efforts to save them, he’s captured and subjected to merciless torture—losing virtually every piece of his identity but his pulse.
After his rescue, he returns home from Afghanistan, saddled with facing the daunting task of healing his physical scars as well as the invisible ones—his emotional demons.
Dr. Presley Cole isn’t one to shy away from a challenge. Embarking on a new journey, she makes it her mission to prove to Hendy that his life isn’t over; that he’s worthy of love.
Because sometimes even a phoenix needs help to rise…
Out of the Ashes.

Ms. Boldt has the magic touch when it comes to writing stories about Special Forces veterans returning home and finding love. The books in this series touch on serious issues surrounding the physical and emotional wounds of our warriors, but do so with a grace that creates that much more respect for these dedicated soldiers and sailors.

After reading Out of Love and learning a little bit about Hendy, I wasn’t sure how I felt about the idea of him “coming back from the dead” to be the leading man of this story. That concern didn’t last long at all as we got to know him and discovered what a great guy he was. There were hints regarding a bigger story around Hendy’s capture and rescue – and his father – that left me curious. I’m wondering if we won’t learn more about some of that is a future book.

Presley was a fantastic match for Hendy. She was a great combination of smart, sensitive, and silly. I appreciated the way that while she was helping Hendy physically and eventually emotionally, he was helping her too.

One of the things I love about the heroes of this series is that even though they are very Alpha, they have also maintained their humanity. We get to see them with family and friends, and we also get to see them work to deal with their issues to make a better life for themselves.

Out of The Ashes is the second book in the series, but can easily be read as a stand-alone. The secondary cast here is pretty much the same as in Out of Love with a few additions, Hendy and Presley are the core of this story and while reading the books in order would be helpful, it’s not necessary.

I am a full time mom who works part time. I squeeze reading in wherever I can between work, volunteer stuff, and kid activities. I read a little bit of everything, but really enjoy indie authors and Happy- Ever-Afters. I've been reviewing for Cocktails and Books since January 2015.
