Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me. Lies. Words destroyed me. “I’m sorry. She didn’t make it.” “Daddy, he can’t breathe!” “There’s nothing more we can do for your son.” Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me. More lies. Those syllables and letters became my executioner. I told myself that, if I didn’t acknowledge the pain and the fear, they would have no power over me. But, as the years passed, the hate and the anger left behind began to control me. Two words—that was all it took to plunge my life into darkness. “He’s gone.” In the end, it was four soft, silky words that gave me hope of another sunrise. “Hi. I’m Charlotte Mills.”

The Brightest Sunset, the conclusion to Aly Martinez’s newest duet, was a great ending to a perfect series.  So good in fact I read it in one sitting.

Picking up right where The Darkest Sunrise leaves off we get to see the journey Porter and Charlotte go on to try to save their family.  Each one dealing with the pain of loss in so many different ways and then when they finally are able to come together the strength they find makes them a force to be reckoned with.  Told in dual POV’s we get to see both Charlotte and Porters journey’s which I loved.  Ms. Martinez writing style shines with sharp witty dialog, great emotional arcs, and humor that I think make her a special writer and one I will go to again and again.

If you are looking for a well-written story that starts dark but ends with the brightest of lights then this duet is perfect.

THE BRIGHTEST SUNSET – BLURB:

Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me.

Bullshit.

Words destroyed me.

“I’m sorry. She didn’t make it.”

“Daddy, he can’t breathe!”

“There’s nothing more we can do for your son.”

Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me.

Lies.

Those syllables and letters became my executioner. I told myself that, if I didn’t acknowledge the pain and the fear, they would have no power over me. But, as the years passed, the hate and the anger left behind began to control me.

Two words—that was all it took to plunge my life into darkness.

“He’s gone.”

In the end, it was four soft, silky words that gave me hope of another sunrise.

“Hi. I’m Charlotte Mills.”

AUTHOR BIO:

Originally from Savannah, Georgia, USA Today bestselling author Aly Martinez now lives in South Carolina with her four young children.

Never one to take herself too seriously, she enjoys cheap wine, mystery leggings, and baked feta. It should be known, however, that she hates pizza and ice cream, almost as much as writing her bio in the third person.

She passes what little free time she has reading anything and everything she can get her hands on, preferably with a super-sized tumbler of wine by her side.

I am 44 years old married and live in Tucson AZ. I have no children but do have a cat who thinks she is a child so it works out ok. I am originally from central/northern California and growing up we spent a lot of time driving from literally one end of the state to the other. That's when I really found my love for reading. I read anything I could get my hands on from Judy Blume to Beverly Cleary to Ronald Dahl as a child and as I grew up my love for romance grew starting with the Sweet Valley High series to Danielle Steel, Janet Daily and of course Jackie Collins. I would have loved the way social media has impacted readers and authors growing up, to be able to be in a community that loves to talk about the same things as you do is fantastic. Plus to be able to reach out to the storytellers themselves to me is priceless. I also enjoy movies, love sports (SF 49ers and San Jose Sharks) and I love to travel though reading is my number 1 favorite hobby. I've been reviewing for Cocktails and Books since April 2015.
