Forever (Wolves of Mercy Falls 3) – Maggie Stiefvater

The thrilling conclusion to #1 bestselling Shiver trilogy from Maggie Stievater

In Maggie Stiefvater’s SHIVER, Grace and Sam found each other. In LINGER, they fought to be together. Now, in FOREVER, the stakes are even higher than before. Wolves are being hunted. Lives are being threatened. And love is harder and harder to hold on to as death comes closing in.

I’ve waited a day to write this review because I was trying to collect my thoughts on the ending to the series.  I’m still left wondering why it ended the way it did.

The story picks up two months after the ending of Linger.  Grace is out running with the pack, losing herself in the ways of the wolves while Sam waits.  While Sam waits, baking bread and being an insomniac, Cole searches for a clue to a cure for Grace in Becks notes.

When Grace does come back to her human self, it’s to questions about where she and Sam go from here.  When Sam was a wolf, she dreamed of being a wolf and running into Boundary Woods with him.  Now that she’s lived that life, she realizes she really does want those human dreams she had of graduating high school and college, along with a life with her human Sam.

But it seems forces are conspiring against them.  Shelby (who we haven’t seen since Shiver) is up to no good, Isabel’s father (Tom Culpepper) wants the wolves gone and will stop at nothing to avenge his son and the Brisbanes want Sam gone, convinced he’s done something horrible to Grace.

A lot happened to wrap up the series, but I was left wondering too many things (and I can’t list those here without giving the ending away).  Don’t get me wrong, this was a great book.  It was an emotional, gut-wrenching (Sam is such a tortured soul) page turner that had me fully engrossed in the characters and what could possibly happen to finish this off.  BUT I hate feeling like I’m left hanging.

I may amend this review later, but for now I’ll leave it as is.  It’s still an awesome read.
