Emma Chase, New York Times bestselling author of the Tangled Series, returns with the first installment of the Legal Briefs Series. As a DC defense attorney, Stanton Shaw keeps his head cool, his questions sharp, and his arguments irrefutable. They don’t call him the Jury Charmer for nothing – with his southern drawl, disarming smile and captivating green eyes – he’s a hard man to say no to. Men want to be him and women want to be thoroughly cross examined by him.Stanton’s a man with a plan. And for a while, life was going according to that plan.Until the day he receives an invitation to the wedding of his high school sweetheart and mother of his beloved ten-year old daughter. Jenny is getting married — to someone who isn’t him. That's definitely not part of the plan.***Sofia Santos is a city raised, no-nonsense litigator who plans to become the most revered criminal defense attorney in the country. She doesn’t have time for relationships or distractions. But when Stanton, her "friend with mind-blowing benefits" begs for help, she finds herself out of her element, out of her depth, and obviously out of her mind. Because she agrees to go with him – to The-Middle-Of-Nowhere, Mississippi – to do all she can to help Stanton win back the woman he loves. Her head tells her she's crazy...and her heart says something else entirely.*** What happens when you mix a one stop-light town, two professional arguers, a homecoming queen, four big brothers, some Jimmy Dean sausage and a gun-toting Nana? The Bourbon flows, passions rise and even the best laid plans get overruled by the desires of the heart.

Karen’s Thoughts

OVERRULED is a fast paced, sexy story filled with snappy dialogue and colorful characters. The story centers on Stanton who grows up in a small town in Mississippi. He is blessed with good looks, charm, and intelligence and comes from a loving family.   When he leaves for college to pursue his dream of becoming an attorney, he leaves behind Jenny, his high school girlfriend and their infant daughter.  We see Stanton change from a naïve farm boy to a suave, womanizing Washington lawyer.  Ten years later everything in Stanton’s life is perfect, until Jenny tells him she is getting married. She never left their small town where she is raising their child.  Stanton is a loving father, although he is too busy with his career to spend much time with his daughter. Once he hears the news of Jenny’s marriage, Stanton decides to return home to talk her out of getting married and he asks Sofia, his current friend with benefits, to go with him for moral support.

I loved every minute of this clever story about a guy who can’t figure out what he wants.  Normally I don’t enjoy stories about a person who can’t make up their mind about who they want to be with, but I loved this witty story. Stanton is a southern boy and thinks he has to take care of the little woman.  But the women he tries to protect are strong and tough and can handle just about anything on their own.  Jenny and Sofia are smart, independent women and I found myself admiring both of them.  I have a love hate relationship with Stanton.  Stanton sees things as he wants to see them and expects everything to fall into place.  He has a sweet and charming side and he also can be clueless and unintentionally hurtful.  Stanton is a cocky guy and it is hilarious how his friends and family continually bring him down to size.  I thought Stanton’s southern drawl was sexy and he is such a dirty talker.  Emma Chase brings all the characters to life in this story and made me feel like I was right there with them. She knows how to write a great story with lots of funny and interesting secondary characters that I hope to see in future books.   I loved every minute of this story!
