23129684“Enjoying pain with your pleasure is something you either get, or you don’t. If you get it, then you don’t really need it explained, because you know how good it feels, and if you don’t get it then no amount of talking is going to convince you it makes sense.”

But sometimes you have to explain the unexplainable, especially if the love of your life needs to understand, or she’ll leave you. Jason Schuyler is one of Anita Blake’s best friends and favorite werewolves, with benefits. J.J. is his lady love, an old flame from childhood who dances at one of the top ballet companies in New York. She’s accomplished, beautiful, and she’s crazy about him, too. Neither of them wants to be monogamous, so what could go wrong?

J.J. is enthusiastically bisexual, with an emphasis on the female side of things. She plans to keep sleeping with women, because Jason can’t meet that need, just like she can’t meet Jason’s need for rough sex and bondage. J.J. doesn’t understand why Jason isn’t content to go elsewhere for a need she can’t fulfil, so Jason asks Anita to help him explain.

Anita is having her own relationship growing pains with her only female lover ever, Jade. Jason suggests that J.J. might be able to help Anita with her girl problem, while she helps him with his kinky explanations. With some encouragement from a few other lovers in Anita’s life she reluctantly agrees, and J. J. makes plans to fly into town for an experience that none of them will ever forget.

Reviewer’s Thoughts

Jason is the twenty-third book in the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter series by Laurell K. Hamilton.  While this book is part of a series, it can be read and enjoyed as a standalone novel.

Anita Blake is a woman with many roles and jobs in life.  She does her best to protect those who need her help.  She is a Necromancer and a Vampire hunter.  She is anomaly even in her own world.  She carries between four or five different strains of lycanthropy virus in a world where no one can carry more than one strain.  She is a direct woman with an attitude that has a big heart, which does not like to acknowledge.

Jason Schuyler is one of Anita Blake’s best friends and a stripper at Guilty Pleasures as well as Jean-Claude’s pomme de sang.  He is also a wolf shifter.  Jason is the one person in Anita’s life that can tell her the truth and she will not get angry with him.   Jason has a steady girlfriend, J.J., which he has come to an agreement with.  However, she does not understand his need for rough sex and bondage.  Jason wants Anita’s help to show J.J. why he enjoys it.

This book is not like the other books in the series.  Most of the other books have some sort of evil bad guy that Anita is either helping the police or a friend.  This book however is one big orgy where Anita works on her relationships with the members of her circle, male or female.  Anita has to face that sometimes she cannot fix everything.

I found this book very well written with a unexpected plot.  The main characters and secondary characters are interesting. I liked that Ms. Hamilton brought in several of the secondary characters we are used to seeing. The ending of the book was predictable however this book is different than the other books in the series.  This book does not have a crime that Anita is trying to solve and is only focused on sex.  Overall, this was a good book.
