Every once in a while, you need to get away from it all.
I was a woman on the edge, shaken and shattered after a breakup that felt like it tore my entire world apart.
My best friend, sick of watching me drown in misery and melancholy, harassed me until I agreed to go with her on a week-long wilderness retreat.
She promised days spent bonding and getting in touch with our inner bad-asses. It was supposed to be all about the two of us roughing it and making do with the bare minimum. She assured me we were going to be pushed to our limits in ways that were unimaginable. Neither one of us could have ever guessed just how right she was.
Nowhere in the glossy brochure did it say anything about the fact I was going to have to battle the insufferable but deliciously rugged and sexy trail guide instead of the elements. The brochure also forgot to mention the part that warned when you left civilization behind, there was no place to pack your inhibitions and fears.
I was told that I would be facing a week where the only thing I should expect was the unexpected. However, no one mentioned that I was going to have to fight for my life…and my heart as soon as I ventured into the unknown.
I was a pro at hiding from my feelings but when it came time to face a real threat, one that could change everything, I learned I was more of a no surrender, no retreat kind of girl.
Retreat is a standalone novel, the first in the Getaway series which centers on the hardheaded and brokenhearted Warner brothers and the women that dare to love them.
These boys are very good at putting the wild in wilderness.

I dove blindly into Retreat by Jay Crownover. I mean, I love Jay Crownover. I have read everything she has written and I have to say this might be my new favorite. Rule will always have a special place in my heart but Cyrus is the guy I would want in real life.

When I started reading this book and it was set in Wyoming and these two city girls, Leonra and Emrys, were going to take a week in the wilderness to find themselves, I was skeptical. This didn’t sound like a Jay Crownover book and I was curious as to what kind of story this would be. From Chapter One, I adored Leonra (Leo) and Em. Clearly, this girls had a friendship that could weather any storm. Leo, who is coming off of a broken heart and complete embarassment, mixed with a side of angry, needs to remember who she is and Emrys (Em) thinks this trip will help.

What starts out as a simple week in the wilderness becomes so much more as Leo starts to see herself again through the many adventures they have as well as battling wits with Cyrus (Cy). These two and their banter is for the record books. I kept flipping the pages faster and faster, smiling and laughing as I went.

Cy doesn’t look the part of a cowboy with his motorcycle boots, black tees, and slicked back silvery black hair. Leo is skeptical and doesnt’ waste any time telling him. Leo is the first one in a long time to go toe to toe with Cy and make him want to actually engage with people and the world around him.

What happens with these two out in the woods is like a burning wildfire. The action between the two is hot and the action that Jay Crownover writes is unexpected for the whole group. I didn’t expect this book would take a turn into Romantic Suspense but it did. I loved it. Couldn’t get enough and sadly, I can’t seem to move onto my next book because I just want more from this series. I didn’t even elaborate on the cast of characters but they are worthy of books all to themselves. Jay, you need to work your magic and give us Sutton and Emrys’s story soon. Thanks again for this surprise! Leo and Cy were a hell of a surprise and quite a ride!
