The Boy is Back is part of the Boy series by Meg Cabot, but it is the first in this series I have read. I have read other Meg Cabot books and find her writing to be witty and entertaining. However, this one did not hold my attention as some of her other books. The story is told entirely in texts, journal entries, emails, and internet posts amongst the characters. Some of the characters were likeable and others were pretty unforgettable.
Reed and Becky are reunited under odd circumstances, so that part of the plot is kind of entertaining. He hasn’t been back to their hometown since his dad basically disowned him. Now, his parents & siblings need him so he makes the sacrifice of coming home. An unexpected benefit of that is spending time with Becky again. I didn’t find Reed and Becky’s exchanges all that interesting, but his brother Marshall & his wife Carly’s texts were hilarious. They were spot on the way married couples interact—at least in my house! I also loved Uncle Lyle’s emails back and forth with Reed. He was funny, understanding, wise, and loving, just like an uncle should be.
Perhaps if I had read other books in the Boy series I would have enjoyed this one more. It is fun read, and if you are already a Meg Cabot fan then you will enjoy it.
