Going into this book I thought I knew what to expect. I had read S.L. Jennings first book in this series Tainted and enjoyed it – the second book had a completely different tone with some twist and turns that I am not sure totally worked
Tucker and Heidi have been married 10 years. Tucker was Heidi’s psychiatrist helped her to get past a horribly violent attack that left her scared in more ways than one. Heidi a beautiful take no prisoners publicist who is committed to both her job and her husband. She wishes though that he would not treat her with kid gloves even after 10 years – their life together is mundane and full of routine especially when it comes to sex. Tucker won’t even consider Heidi’s repeated requests to take their sex life down a darker path; the cookie cutter approach is not working for her any longer. Enter Ransom a hot rock star who is 7 years Heidi’s junior who leads a completely different life – one that very much intrigues Heidi.
After a night that takes an unexpected turn the 3 of them are thrown together and have a connection that makes Heidi feel guilty and unworthy of her life with Tucker. To try and fix their marriage they escape to Justice Drakes Oasis to try and revitalize their marriage – with Ransom in tow where things go into an even darker, more manipulated place then before.
This to me almost seemed like 2 different stories – one about a women’s exploration of her dark sexual side and the man who can help make those fantasies come true. The second was a book about manipulation and while you may think you are doing something for all the right reasons you really aren’t. There were quite a few references to Cruel Intentions and after reading the book I got why. The main characters are not particularly likable and that made this books twits a hard sell for me; which I didn’t have that problem with in the first book. The ending tries to make everything ok with a happy ending – not sure if I completely bought it.
I do happen to thoroughly enjoy SL Jennings writing style – her narrative and dialog are great and she can write a fantastic sex scene. I also loved the epilogue the set up for a third book was well done and I am really looking forward to that story.
Overall I think Tryst has enough good points against the bad to recommend it.
