V is for VampWoman

I’ll admit it; I’m a huge fan of Ms. Sparks and this series in particular. But I must say this story was a bit disappointing. I was not very fond of Lady Pamela to begin with. I always found her character to be vain and self-important. Having read her story and getting a glimpse of her past in her own words has not changed my mind at all. Except now we can add deluded to her list of shining qualities. Lady Pamela, or VampWoman as she prefers to call herself now, plays at being a superhero, as if 6 months of training in fencing would make her the least bit helpful in fighting Malcontents. If anything, her insistence that she’s fully qualified to fight alongside men that have several hundreds of years of experience in battle severely downplays and makes a mockery of everything they stand for and do. I had hoped the romance would make up for this, however even that was at best tepid and lackluster. I’m not sure what Ms. Sparks was thinking, but I can tell you this was not in keeping with what I’ve grown to expect from her writing through the years.

A Forever Love

This is a completely new series to me and I’m sure to most of Palmer’s fans, as this is merely book 1.5 in her new Vamp City series. That being said, I found the world building fantastic and in keeping with what one has come to expect from this talented author. Although a short novella, the characters had an amazing amount of depth to them. My only regret is that this wasn’t a longer read. I will definitely be following the rest of this series and you should too.

First Dates Are Hell

From the very first page, I found myself getting deeply involved with the characters. Val appears to be a vampire that suffers from agoraphobia if you can believe that! Esme is so painfully shy and awkward that she in invisible to the people around her. These two characters are perfect for each other. There was an endearing awkwardness between these two socially damaged people that you would expect from a centuries old vampire. Circumstances make theirs the best worse date ever, leading to self-discovery of hidden strengths neither one knew they had. I found this to be a great short novella that I will be eagerly following.

Blood on Water

With a whole different take on vampires, Falconer presents us with the Mar people. Creatures that, although need blood to survive, live in the sea. Interesting world building, if a bit confusing for someone used to the traditional type of vampire that stalks the night looking for prey and sleeps the day away in darkness safe from exposure to the sun. Not usually a traditionalist in my reading habits, I still find myself torn. I enjoyed this short novella but wished there had been more detail about the Mar and why they hate the “landers” so much. It was not unlike the feeling you get when you walk up in to a conversation already in progress. You may find it interesting, but you have no clue how they got to the conclusions they are deducing. Maybe a full-length novel would have answered my many questions.
