21950100Danny Lyon has never had much luck at romance. After a failed relationship drives him from his hometown, he finds his way into the city only to discover that life doesn’t often turn out how you’d like.

Working at a strip club, The Treasure Chest certainly isn’t his dream job, but it pays well. Everything is going along fine until he meets Terrence LeBrec, an older man who shows up one night out of the blue. Terrence is rich, laid back, and as the chemistry between them erupts, it also surprises Danny that he’s attracted to a man who otherwise isn’t his type.

Terrence only went to The Treasure Chest to pass away time. He never expected to meet anyone, but when Danny takes the stage, he’s totally taken with the young man who he knows nothing about. He has to meet him. There’s something definitely between them. Terrence can’t deny it. They have a connection that he can’t let go. One hookup leads him to want more.

It doesn’t take a lot of time for Danny to realize how different their lives really are. Why would a guy like Terrence who has everything going for him be interested in a guy like him? It doesn’t make sense. They come from different worldsβ€”perhaps too different.

Will what brought them together tear them apart? They’re opposites in every way possible. Will love conquer all?

Reviewer’s Thoughts

I’m sorry to say that I was rather disappointed in “When You Least Expect It.” The blurb drew me in. Older man meets a younger man in a gay strip club.Β I love May/December type romances. I also love the strip club atmosphere. Oftentimes, it makes for some really hot encounters. In that sense, I got what IΒ wanted out of that…a really steamy private lap dance scene that made my Kindle sizzle, leading to a really nuclear sex scene at Terrence’s (the older man)Β house. After that, I was excited to dig right in to the rest of the story, and that’s when it went downhill for me. Signals were crossed, and Danny (theΒ younger man) left.

Even though he is still thinking of Danny, Terrence meets an old flame at a restaurant and then heads back to his place to have sex. Right at that point,Β it almost became a DNF. This is my personal preference, and yours could be different, but to me, after a book’s main couple have sex, that means that theyΒ are together…signals crossed or not. So, I considered Terrence’s actions to be cheating (Especially if it’s only the DAY AFTER!!), and that is a hard limitΒ for me in a romance novel. The only reason that I continued was that I was committed to writing this review. After that, Terrence and Danny spend theΒ weekend together. Sure it may not have gone as well as they wanted, but less than a week after that, Danny picks up someone, takes him to his place and hasΒ some pretty intense sex. Now, Danny is a cheater in my eyes as well.

I struggled to finish “When You Least Expect It.” Β I will say that I did really enjoy the sex scenes. If I tried very hard, I could ignore the part ofΒ my brain that was screaming “CHEATER CHEATER PUMPKIN EATER!!”, and just let go and read them for what they were. Amazing, sweaty sex. I can also say thatΒ the plot flowed smoothly, and everything was very well written. In fact, that’s why I am giving it three stars, rather than going any lower. I’m not, by anyΒ means, trying to discourage you from reading this book. It’s all about personal taste, and this one just wasn’t mine. If you like your man love passionate,Β dirty, and a little rough, this could be for you. I’m definitely going to try a few more books written by Xondra Day because I want to see if she canΒ give me something I can sink my teeth into and love.
