Kara Walker has never found much glamour in her own life, especially not when compared to the life of her best friend Bobby Ebadi. Bobby, along with his sophisticated parents Leila and Hossein, is everything Kara always wanted to be. The trio provides the perfect antidote to what Kara views as the more mundane problems of her girlfriends and her divorced parents. And so when the Ebadis assume that Kara is Bobby’s girlfriend, she willingly steps into the role. She enjoys the perks of life in this closet, not only Leila’s designer hand-me-downs and free rent, but also the excitement of living life as an Ebadi.

As Kara’s 30th birthday approaches, Leila and Hossein up the pressure. They are ready for Kara to assume the mantle of the next Mrs. Ebadi, and Bobby seems prepared to give them what they want: the illusion of a traditional home and grandchildren. How far will Kara be willing to go? And will she be willing to pull the Persian rug out from under them when she discovers that her own secret is just one of many lurking inside the Ebadi closet?

Reviewer’s Thoughts

I was easily swept up into the world that the author presents, it’s not a world I’ve ever envisioned or had any insights into before. I myself haven’t experienced being almost 30 and not knowing where my life is going, but I did find myself endeared to Kara. She was kind of drifting and letting Bobby’s family believe that she and Bobby were an item, because she does love Bobby, just not the way that his family wants.

I enjoyed the wit of this story, I laughed and even teared up a few times. I definitely got into the book enough to be emotionally invested in the characters. The author does a great job of showing the culture and how hard it is to try and adjust to a new culture, and shows that everyone puts on a face to the world, just to get by.

It’s a story that I highly recommend, and I think because it shows the intricacies of relationships and what it’s like to be human, that anyone can pick this up and find themselves immersed in a fascinating world with an author that sets just the right tone to entertain and create a story that provides the message to always be authentic to yourself.
