Review: The Other Brother by Lucy Felthouse

Photographer Melodie Carr moved to New York City to escape the death of her fiancé in Iraq. Struggling to come to terms with it ever since, she sees a call for photographs for a calendar to benefit family members of fallen heroes, and is eager to help out.

Unfortunately, she doesn’t know any men that fit the profile. Not until Patrick Brogan—her late fiancé’s brother—turns up in New York. Seeing him brings up all kinds of memories, but she’s determined to push them aside and persuade him to take part in the calendar. But is that all he’ll take part in?

Reviewer’s Thoughts

With the Calendar Men series, the books are usually hit or miss with me. Sadly this book landed in the “miss” category. I liked the premise of the story but I had trouble relating to the characters.

Melodie moves to New York to leave her old life and devastating past behind her. Her late fiancé’s brother, whom she hasn’t seen in years, shows up on her doorstep and announces that he’s moved to New York for a new job.

Melodie is torn between grief and relief at seeing Patrick. They chat, he leaves and then all of a sudden Melodie gets an epiphany about using Patrick as a model for her submission to a sexy men calendar with the proceeds benefiting the families of fallen soldiers.

How Melodie goes from not seeing Patrick in years to propositioning him to pose as a model for her is a little unusual to me. What’s even more unusual is that when she asks Patrick to do it and he says no, she thinks he’s selfish and basically tells him to f*ck off. Then after Patrick thinks about it, beseeches Melodie and tells her he’s going to do it to help honor his brother.

I know it’s a short story and things have to happen fast in order to get the whole story out but it just couldn’t keep me interested. This is my first read from Lucy Felthouse and, although I didn’t enjoy the book, it won’t dissuade me from checking out future books from the author.
