Guest Review: Waking Up Dead – Skye Savoy

Before death came to collect Ava Berry in the form of one mouth-watering fallen angel named Suriyel, she was a newly divorced, 51-year-old caterer with a passion for all things Elvis and Paula Deen. Thanks to Suriyel and his magic amulet, she’s now in the body of her 20-something niece who died on the same night. Ava’s hell-bent on catching a killer even if it means not being heaven-bound anymore. Fending off a possessed dumpster and an Elvis impersonator while dealing with her deceased mother who’s back as her pimped-out, Hoverround-riding, guardian angel, are a lot easier than keeping her heart away from Suriyel. The soul-collector risks being thrown back into the center of the earth so he can protect and teach Ava to use the powers of the amulet. Good thing, too, because she soon finds herself using it to save his life and what remains of her lineage

Reviewer’s Thoughts:

When the description of a book mentions an Elvis impersonator and a possessed dumpster trying to kill a woman recently deceased, but brought back to live on earth through the body of her deceased niece, I have to know more.  And boy was I pleasantly surprised.

Ava is the heroine in this hilariously fun book.  When she wakes up dead, she has far more questions than answers, and finds herself face to face with the angel who has come to collect her soul, Suriyel.  She convinces him to allow her a chance to find her killer, and is brought back to live on earth in the form of her dead niece.  As Ava searches, Suriyel is determined to help her, no matter the cost.  I love Ava’s strong will and tenacity.  She compliments Suriyel’s quiet and dark demeanor.  The romance that blooms between the two of them is passionate and sweet, and they find themselves willing to sacrifice their own souls to save one another.  As beautiful as that sounds, however, they’re trying to save themselves from, you’ve probably guessed it by now, an Elvis impersonator and a possessed dumpster.

As much as I adored the love story between Ava and Suriyel, I had a really hard time taking any of this seriously.  The story was so cheese-tastic at times that I couldn’t help but literally laugh out loud.  If you’re looking for a good laugh with a little romance thrown in, this is definitely the book for you.
