Ruby Fontenot, a Cajun hermit, loses control of her life when she’s tapped to become the last Lineage Chieftain in a paranormal world she had no idea existed. With the power to change the face of The Veil by choosing its leaders, Ruby is now a wanted woman. Once she meets a member of the Veilerian High Council, what began as a fight for her life turns into a fight for her heart and her freedom. As the High Council Representative, Lucian Ravenswaay has spent decades searching for the elusive Lineage Chieftain only to discover she’s his life mate. But this vampire has bigger plans than settling down; he wants a Council seat and to get it, he’ll have to turn Ruby over to them. The line between what he wants and what he needs is blurred and making the wrong choice could mean the destruction of an entire society.

Reviewer’s Thoughts:

Excitement, action and a touch of mystery make for a thoroughly captivating story. We are treated to a unique look at our heroine compliments of Avet. Ruby is unlike your average heroine. Her vulnerability is shown plainly as she hides away from people. She is not so much afraid of people as she is leery of their reactions to her sheer size. However, Ruby has an inner core of strength that has yet to be tested. No matter how fearful she is of being around people, she is strong and capable of taking care of herself. We watch captivated as Ruby makes the metamorphosis from introverted hermit to a woman in charge of her own destiny. Far from the chick lit it sounds like, Avet gives us enough sizzle between Ruby and Lucian to start spontaneous combustion.

Strong supporting characters round off what promises and does not fail to deliver on hell of a story. A must read if you enjoy kick ass heroines, hot vampires and secondary characters so strong they could probably pull off their own stories. A fantastic start to what promises to be a great series.
