Review: Lifestyles of the Fey and Dangerous (The Veil #3) – Danica Avet

It isn’t every day a fairy gets an assignment with only one outcome: her death. As an assassin with the Eturian army, Noelani “Shade” Fayard has killed more than her share of traitors, but for the first time in centuries, she hesitates to take out her target. The Halfling marked for death makes her wonder what life would be like if it weren’t for the blood staining her hands and soul. He makes her feel for the first time in centuries. Malachi Cromwell, a former Eturian general, wants to reclaim his place in The Veil, not fall in lust or love. He knows better than to let his heart take the lead, especially when he discovers Lani was sent to kill him, just like she’d killed the very people who held his fate in their hands. Can they overcome their distrust and bitter pasts to forge a future together?

Reviewer’s Thoughts:

When the story opens up we are right back in the midst of the war against the Eutarians. The detailed progression of the relationship between Malachi and Lani from guarded and cold to lifetime mates was perfect. With her usual talent for description, Avet adds twists and turns, keeping the reader interested and on the edge of their seat. That is not to say that the entire book is all doom and gloom. Giving us lust, passion the quest for redemption and our favorite Veilorian Amazons with their unique blend of fierceness and comic relief, the characters are skillfully developed with an easy to follow growth that builds from book to book in this series. Although it could be read as a stand-alone, the building of plot and characters does continue through each book in the series and I would suggest reading them all.
For those familiar with the series, you will find book 3 to be decidedly darker in nature and a lot edgier than you may be used to from the previous books. However, it does keep true to the usual amount of action, romance and of course comedic moments, compliments of the Amazons, that you may have come to expect from Avet.
I was provided with a copy of the book by BTS eMag for the purpose of honest review. All conclusions are my own.
