Review: Black Jack – Lora Leigh

The Secret Service can’t control him. The British government can’t silence him. But renegade agent Travis Caine is one loose cannon you don’t want to mess with, so his commanders cut him a break—and cut him loose. His new HQ is America’s top intelligence force, Elite Ops. His new code name is “Black Jack.” And his new assignment is to die for.

She’s smart, sexy, scintillating—and one of Elite Ops’ savviest agents. Lillian Belle’s code name is “Night Hawk,” and Travis certainly wouldn’t mind flying a few midnight maneuvers with her. But when their mission turns into a red-hot game of danger, deceit, and double-crossed signals, Travis begins to wonder: Can he trust her? Can he resist her?

Reviewer’s Thoughts

Lora Leigh has done it again. Ms. Leigh continues to amaze me with her storytelling abilities and attention to detail within the story. Not even the tiniest of details is overlooked in her quest for the perfectly told story. With so many different characters, team members, villains and the like, I would not have been the least bit surprised if there were mix-ups through the book. Instead I found difficulty finding a single one.

Not often do you have a hero who allows the heroine to be just that… a heroine. Oftentimes he will step in and turn into Neanderthal man wanting to protect and shelter. This is one of my biggest pet peeves in romance novels. Thankfully, that is not the case here. Travis knows Lily is fully capable of taking care of herself and he allows her to do so.

An even better point to note would be the question of who is the villain. Who tried to kill Lily Belle? Was it her uncle who seemed to have all the resources? The brother who may have been caught up in something he couldn’t handle? The mother who at her very best gave could give Mommy Dearest a run for her money? Or was it an unknown and still to be uncovered enemy? Lord knows in their line of work the Elite Ops team members have plenty of those. This was a mystery that even I could not figure out. Which just added to my enjoyment of the overall story.

Although I have not read all of the previous books, I had no trouble following the storyline or figuring out the character dynamic. My only wish, if I could change anything at all, would have been to see more of the chemistry between Travis and Lily in the beginning of the book. Other than that, Black Jack hits all the points for a book I would not only read but also keep so I could repeat at a later date.
