16118963A cabal of operatives with dangerous pasts team up to work black ops missions. Their weapon: deception. Can they help one of their own before he goes too far?

When Gunner agreed to help out Section 8, he didn’t realize he’d be pulled back in to the shadowy world he’d thought he’d escaped forever. The son of double agents, Gunner was initiated at a young age into the cold world of espionage when his father forced him to work for international smuggler Drew Landon. And when Gunner’s past with Landon threatens the other mercenaries, and most importantly, Avery, he makes an impossible choice…and disappears.

Avery’s not willing to give up on Gunner. The attraction between them has been there from the start and she rallies Section 8 to help him. She knows there’s only one way to keep Gunner safe: fake his death and take him off the grid. But when she finally locates him, Gunner is a changed man, harder, more desperate, and on the edge of self-destruction. And only Avery can find a way to free him from Landon—and from the demons of his past—before it’s too late.

Reviewer’s Thoughts

Stephanie Tyler continues her Section 8 series with Unbreakable, the second book of the series featuring Avery and Gunner. The first book, Surrender, does a good job of telling about the history of the group and explaining its formation while also introducing the reader to the characters. Although you do not have to read Surrender to enjoy Unbreakable it is highly recommended because it will give you a deeper understanding of the characters and enjoyable backdrop. The novel begins following the end of the mission from book one, with the characters enjoying a little bit of time together prior to splitting up and deciding whether Section 8 should continue to exist or disband for good. Although Avery is attracted to Gunner he feels as though he is a bad bet because he is being pulled back into his old life, something he does not want Avery to be involved. As he pulls further away and closer to the darkness he used to be accustomed Avery pulls every resource she has in order to try to save him.

Gunner is a very complicated person who keeps the reader guessing about for most of the story. He has a string of broken hearts and ex-wives a mile long, all because of a past he can’t seem to shake. After the mission in Surrender Gunner’s old boss wants him back, and he is willing to do almost anything to keep him away from his other team members. The only thing stronger than his resolve to keep his friends’ out of his situation is Avery’s resolve to help him out. She pulls out all the stops to get her man, and uses all her skills to get him back. She is the glue to helps keep everyone together and really tries to show Gunner she is strong enough to handle any situation. Additional secrets about Gunner’s past, hair-raising incidents to keep you on the edge of your seat, and the introduction of new characters helped to round out this exciting read!
