4.5 Cocktails

I wasn’t sure what to expect from Haddie and Becks’ story, but I have to say K. Bromberg managed to send me on an emotional roller coaster with this couple.  There were many times I wanted to beat Haddie with the very book I was reading and could often be found grumbling about her when I didn’t have the book in my hand.  If that isn’t a testament to just how emotionally engaged the author had me, I don’t know what is.

We meet up with Haddie and Becks on Colton and Rylee’s wedding night.  And you can immediately tell there is something very different about this Haddie than the one we met before.  She’s sad, but spends a lot of time trying to make everyone believe she’s ok.  It’s very clear, she isn’t.  She’s closed herself off to everyone, including Rylee, in hopes of sparing them the unimaginable grief she’s feeling now.  She uses sex as a way to feel something, without having to actually let go of the numbness she lives with otherwise.  As much as I wanted to understand Haddie, her actions and her thought process, I just couldn’t related pushing everyone away that could help her through everything she was feeling.  I would get angry with her when she used Becks for her own needs and then so callously threw him aside when he pushed for what he wanted.  I knew she regretted every hurtful thing she did to Becks, but I didn’t want to excuse her hurting a good man…even if he was willing to let it all go.

Being Colton’s best friend, I had an image of Becks being just as bad ass as Colton.  And to a certain extent, he could be.  But when it came to Haddie (and yes, she had voodoo too), Becks was a completely different man.  He softened, a bit, when it came to Haddie.  He chased her.  Broke his own rules.  And was bound and determined to crash through all the walls Haddie had built and make her let him in.  He had his work cut out for him.  Haddie wasn’t an easy woman and her fears made her hurt him, a lot, but the man knew what he wanted and he was determined to have her.  He made sure Haddie knew, he wasn’t going to leave her, no matter what she did.  Becks is just that special.

Be ready with the kleenex because this fantastic, emotional, at times gut-wrenching, story will have you reaching for it a few times.  K. Bromberg is a master at stirring those emotions and she has them flowing over in this one.
