Loyalty in the Shadows is a dark new adult enemies to lovers college romantic suspense intended for mature readers. This book is the second in the Crowned Crows series following a gritty brotherhood of antihero bad boys and the feisty heroines that capture their hearts. The plot continues across the next novels and each book in the series should be read in order. If you’re not a fan of morally bankrupt book boyfriends, steer clear. This mature new adult romance contains dubious situations, crude language, and intense sexual/violent content that some readers might find triggering or offensive. Please proceed with caution.
Release date likely to be brought forward.

I was drawn to this book because I was curious about what was going to happen next with this storyline, especially since Rowan and Wren kept my attention.  But Isla and Levi weren’t able to do that, feeling like the story was just dragging along and finally leaving me to DNF this book even though the storyline still had me curious.

Isla was the light in Rowan’s world during the first book, so seeing her happy to stay locked away at the Crow’s Nest didn’t sit right with me.  I get it, she had some really shitty stuff happen to her before, but does that mean she should be okay with being locked away?  Then there is the fact that it appears her parents are in on more of the shitty things happening to her.  Yet she pushes that down and dances the thought away.

I think this is why I had problems with these two characters.  They had horrible things happen to them that hadn’t really been coped with.  Levi beat his issues out on other people’s bodies and Isla danced hers away or ignored it.  Maybe the two of them realize they could help each other towards the end, similar to Rowan and Wren, but I got to the point that I just couldn’t keep reading.  Maybe I’ll be able to go back to it in a bit with a fresh perspective (the beauty of Kindle Unlimited), but for right now I need to step away from this series.

I am a lover of alpha males with dirty mouths, strong heroines putting alpha males in their place, and the Chicago Blackhawks. I'm a proud hockey mom who can often be found at the hockey rink cheering on my favorite forward, with my kindle close by.
