The first daughter is for the Throne. The second daughter is for the Wolf.
For fans of Uprooted and The Bear and the Nightingale comes a dark fantasy novel about a young woman who must be sacrificed to the legendary Wolf of the Wood to save her kingdom. But not all legends are true, and the Wolf isn't the only danger lurking in the Wilderwood.
As the only Second Daughter born in centuries, Red has one purpose-to be sacrificed to the Wolf in the Wood in the hope he'll return the world's captured gods.
Red is almost relieved to go. Plagued by a dangerous power she can't control, at least she knows that in the Wilderwood, she can't hurt those she loves. Again.
But the legends lie. The Wolf is a man, not a monster. Her magic is a calling, not a curse. And if she doesn't learn how to use it, the monsters the gods have become will swallow the Wilderwood-and her world-whole.

Oh my goodness….For the Wolf took forever to read.  Part of this could have been me not being in the right mindset to focus on the storyline, but I don’t think I’m fully to blame.

I’ll be honest, I saw the next book in the series; For the Throne, on NetGalley and was intrigued.  Realizing I needed to get caught up first, I bought this book.  It’s an intriguing storyline; an enchanted forest needs to have a sacrifice of a second daughter in order to keep the monsters at bay.  The second daughter, Red, doesn’t want to be that sacrifice but she is willing to leave in hopes she’ll protect her twin sister Neve from the “awful” powers she feels building in her.

Red discovers the Wilderwoods are not what she had been taught.  She also finds the wolf, Eammon, is also not a monster that will eat her.  He’s a man who was forced into a role he didn’t ask for, just like her.  Their relationship was a slow burn.  SSLLLOOOOOOOWWWW burn.  There were times when I didn’t think Eammon was going to get out to his own noble, martyr way and grasp onto the one person who makes this life better for him.  But Red wasn’t much different.  Everything was about protecting her sister until it was almost too late to realize that after months Eammon, Fife and Lyre were her family, just as much as her sister, and she needed to figure out where she truly belonged.

I’m intrigued enough with the storyline to want to know what happens with Neve.  But I’m taking a break from the Wilderwoods before I delve back in.
