As Prime magic users, Catalina Baylor and her sisters have extraordinary powers—powers their ruthless grandmother would love to control. Catalina can earn her family some protection working as deputy to the Warden of Texas, overseeing breaches of magic law in the state, but that has risks as well. When House Baylor is under attack and monsters haunt her every step, Catalina is forced to rely on handsome, dangerous Alessandro Sagredo, the Prime who crushed her heart.
The nightmare that Alessandro has fought since childhood has come roaring back to life, but now Catalina is under threat. Not even his lifelong quest for revenge will stop him from keeping her safe, even if every battle could be his last. Because Catalina won't rest until she stops the use of the illicit, power-granting serum that's tearing their world apart.

I’m not sure why this book sat in my TBR pile for 2 years, but it did and now part of me regrets it.  I forgot how much I love the Hidden Legacy world.

Catalina, nursing a broken heart is navigating the politics of being the Baylor House Prime and deputy Warden of Texas.  Those things keep her busy and help her not think about a certain Italian Count who went off to chase his revenge.  But mysterious happenings in The Pit have Catalina using all her resources to figure out what’s going on, including accepting a partnership with Alessandro.

Catalina reminds me so much of Nevada.  She carries the weight of her family on her shoulders (not that they asked her to) and she needs someone who is her safe place.  Whether she likes it or not, Alessandro is that person.  Since he’s not affected by her magic she can let lose and not have to hold such control over herself all the time.  She may not see if yet, but he’s that anchor she needs.

As always, there is some kind of baddie that needs tending to.  Arkan is wreaking havoc, and Grandma Tremaine is pulling strings.  The author gives us plenty of action in between the emotional moments with our hero and heroine.  This middle book in the trilogy sets readers up the finale and the ultimate test of House Baylor.
