When Priana Grey walks into a bank, she isn’t expecting to be taken hostage by a violent thief; nor, is she expecting Detective Joe Cafaris to offer his life for hers. The stepdaughter of fallen angels of the Sanctum, she has concealed her true nature to move among humans for years, but Joe’s courage astounds her. Although she knows that falling in love with a human is a disaster, she just can’t ignore what she feels.

Joe is a tough loner, cool in the most dangerous situations, but he’s not ready for the scorching desire he feels for Priana. He has a million logical reasons to walk away, but his heart wants something else.

Priana’s stepbrother, Keirc, warns that she’ll find only misery with Joe, yet he guards a perilous secret of his own. His lover, Iridea, is the daughter of Sebastien Galaurus, a ruthless vampire who leads the Demesne, a powerful supernatural haven quite unlike the Sanctum.
When a stunning crisis forces Priana into the heart of the Demesne, a maelstrom explodes in the shadow of supernatural havens on the brink of war, where fallen angels, vampires, weres and daemons call the shots and humans are viewed as critically frail – a place where men and supernaturals can die.

Priana Grey, daughter to one of the founding families of Sanctum (a haven for fallen angels and other supernaturals) lives amongst humans against the wishes of her step-family.  There are risks to her kind if the humans were to find out what she was, but those are risks she is willing to take…even after finding herself a hostage in a bank robbery, to enjoy the freedom that she has outside of Sanctum.  Especially after she meets Joe Cafaris.

Joe Cafaris, a detective with the Saint Rushton police department, walked into the bank robbery hoping to stop the ex-con from hurting any of the hostages.  He wasn’t expecting to be floored by the beautiful woman Whitewater was holding onto or finding himself wanting to see her again after the ordeal was over.

Pria and Joe are on fire when they’re together.  While Pria has to fend of her well meaning family’s attempt at getting her to stop seeing him, Joe realizes that Pria is not like any other woman he’s been with and this instinctive need to protect and cherish her comes out.  They are each other’s other half and it shows through their actions towards one another and the lengths they would go to ensure the others happiness and safety.

What’s a good romance without some bad guys thrown in there trying wreaking havoc.  In the case of Pria and Joe, it’s her uncle Sebastian, head of the Demesne supernatural haven and enemy of Sanctum.  Knowing that Pria has half angel blood in her, Sebastian plans on using her to help heal his people and extort money from them at the same time.  Unfortunately, he doesn’t plan on his daughter contracting the illness that killed his son and how her sickness will have wide sweeping impact on not on the Demesne haven, but Sanctum as well.

I enjoyed the story, but often times found it a bit confusing with so many different characters talking.  I realize with the first book in a series, the author is trying to set up the storylines and characters, but I could have done without some of the lesser characters and their commentary on what was happening.

  1. Thanks for the honest review, Shannon. I think the story sounds intriguing but I seem to get lost easily if there are too many characters or if I don’t know who’s speaking.
