Review: Edge of Dawn – Lara Adrian

Twenty years after the terror of First Dawn—when mankind learned that vampires lived secretly among them—the threat of violence reigns as the two species struggle to coexist. The only group preserving the fragile harmony is the Order, an elite cadre of Breed warriors dedicated to protecting humans and vampires alike. And in this precarious world of torn loyalties and shattered trust, Mira, a fiery squad captain, finds that every fight bears an intensely personal cost.

Raised among the Order, Mira has always believed in the warrior’s code of swift—and even lethal—justice. But the one thing she desires more than the Order’s hard-won acceptance is Kellan Archer, a sexy but troubled Breed fighter. In love with him since childhood, Mira once broke through his tough exterior during an unexpected night of rapture, but the next day he mysteriously disappeared, never to return.

Kellan didn’t think he would ever see Mira again—or have to confront the truth of why he left. After abandoning the Order years ago, he now leads a band of human rebels intent on carrying out their own vigilante rule of law. Yet a high-profile kidnapping assignment brings him face-to-face with the past he sought to avoid, and the striking woman he has tried desperately to forget. And as tensions mount and the risk of bloodshed grows, Kellan and Mira must take sides—between the competing missions that dominate their lives, and the electrifying passion that claims their hearts.

Reviewer’s Thoughts:

As a huge fan of the Midnight Breed series, I’ve been looking forward to Mira’s story ever since this precocious child was saved and adopted by Niko and his Breedmate, Renata. You know there was something special about a child that has spent her life isolated from others because of her gift, but can still find it in her heart to draw out a sullen teenager who has lost his entire family and give him a reason to smile again. So it’s no wonder that given the opportunity to review Edge of Dawn, I snapped it up in a heartbeat.

As with any eagerly awaited book, of course I have pros and cons. Although I found it difficult to put this book down, I had one major bone of contention and that’s Kellan. It just seemed to me that in an effort to not reiterate a storyline that has already been used in the previous ten books, Adrian took Kellan, who we met as a grieving teenager in book 8, Taken by Midnight, and turned him into an idiot. Without giving anything away that has not already been revealed in the official book synopsis, I will say this… how can an intelligent person not realize that his actions are leading him down the path he is trying so hard to avoid. His very actions are the equivalent of a thief trying to avoid going to prison by repeatedly committing grand theft.  So unfortunately I must say that I found Kellan to be a bit of a disappointment for a good portion of the book.  Kellan’s actions aside, the chemistry between him and Mira was everything I had hoped for and more. Their interactions, whether fighting or making up, were downright explosive.
Between the non-stop action, which is something I’ve come to expect of Adrian’s Midnight Breed series, appearances by original Breeds and the introduction of new characters, I couldn’t seem to put this down and I can’t wait to see who gets their own story next. Will it be the silent but deadly Nathan? Or one of the newer characters? Maybe a certain Breed MMA fighter with a hidden soft side will be next? Either way, I know I’ll be eagerly awaiting the next book in the series.
