Review: Wolf Nip (Granite Lake Wolves #6) – Vivian Arend

Tessa Williams is looking to make her mark outside the family business, and the unusual landlocked paddle wheeler she spots in Haines, Alaska, strikes her as the perfect location. Only the owner is being difficult, refusing to sell. Still, she’s sure that replacing her written queries with a little in-person charm is all she’ll need to shortly have her Eco-tour B&B on the road to success.
Local wolf-slash-owner of said vessel, Mark Weaver, isn’t hanging on to the landmark building out of spite. There are more reasons for holding back the sale than are easily explained on paper. A face-to-face meeting to resolve the matter only confounds it—when Mark recognizes Tessa as his mate.
But she’s a cat…and cats don’t do insta-mates.
The sexual attraction between them isn’t in question, just everything else. He wants her. She wants twue wuv. His wolf can’t figure out what the holdup is. Her cat thinks the entire situation, and the pack, are rather amusing.
Somewhere in here is the beginning of a beautiful relationship—if they don’t drive each other mad.
Warning: One hyper cat, one laid-back wolf. Inappropriate use of permanent markers, and a heaping side dish of cat/dog jokes. Shenanigans (read: nookie) in front of a roaring fire. Spiced liberally with sarcasm. Enjoy!

Reviewer’s Thoughts:

Like snowflakes, no two Granite Pack stories are exactly the same. Although the 6th book in the Granite Wolf Pack series, Arend has yet again created a unique story between two very different shifter series. Those familiar with the Granite Wolf Pack may recognize Tessa from the shifter only cruise that was the setting for book 5. For those not familiar with the series, do not be put off by its place in the series, Arend’s outstanding way with words make for a fantastic standalone novel. You will find that the only thing the books in the series share in common is the pack they all belong to.

Although there is an instant attraction between Tessa and Mark, Arend chose to not focus on the sexual factor and instead made the decision to make this a story about two lonely people and restless people finding love.
I have to admit to finding Tessa to be a bit of a clueless idiot. Here she has a handsome man, bending over backwards for her trying to fulfill her every wish and desire, and she is completely oblivious to how he really feels. She’s got an older brother, she’s a cat shifter, so it’s not as if she’s inexperienced when it comes to the ways of men. As for Mark… what’s there to say other than in typical guy fashion, he shows Tessa how he feels in every which way, except for coming outright and telling her in so many words.

I have been a follower of Ms. Arend’s work, this series in particular, for quite a while. In that time there are certain aspects of her writing that I have come to look forward to. One of which is a lot of sizzle between her main characters. In this she has never failed me. Another is the sense of humor. She can always be counted on creating characters with a quirky sense of humor guaranteed to draw out a chuckle or two. In this, and only this, aspect I found Wolf Nip lacking. Tessa is most definitely quirky with her non-stop energy, sans caffeine. The scene with the marker was definitely the kind of thing I would expect from this author. Sadly, that was about it when it came to chuckle out loud moment. I just wish there had been more.

Overall, a great read that I would definitely recommend if you enjoy shifter stories. If you’re like me and have come to expect a certain amount of humor in Arend’s books, you may be slightly disappointed, but you should pick it up anyway, it’s definitely worth the read.
