Reviewer’s Thoughts

I honestly have no clue what to think of Down on the Farm. The only thing the stories in this anthology seem to have in common is this magical farm in Scotland. You skip through time, not always knowing what century you will be in when you start a new novella and sometimes the language is baffling and difficult to understand. The novellas are about as diverse in intensity and quite honestly in how good they really were.

This is not to say that I did not enjoy them. Far from it. I found the short stories in Down on the Farm to be short, sweet and enjoyable. Unfortunately I also found them to be quite forgettable. Once a novella was done and I moved on to the next one it was difficult to recall the characters in the novella I had just finished. And if that weren’t enough of a put off for me, I had issues with the way some of the novellas began. I could best describe it as that feeling you get when you walk up to a group of people who are already mid conversation. The topic sounds like it could be interesting, but you honestly have no idea what they are talking about or the people being referred to.

The concept of a farm in Scotland surrounded by so much magic sounded like it would be a great read. Unfortunately it seemed to miss the mark more than once. The two novellas I did read in this anthology that grabbed a hold of my attention and didn’t seem to let go just weren’t enough to redeem the others. Overall, Down on the Farm just missed the mark for me.
