Guest Review: Paris Brats – Gwen Ellery

Introducing the Paris Brats Series, a new sitcom for your e-reader!
Just who are the Paris Brats? They’re wits, nitwits and innocents abroad, four friends and two sisters in their twenties who’ve landed in Paris on their backsides, without a cent to their names or much sense to their credit. But don’t worry; they always pick themselves up in time to deliver more sitcom antics and witty asides.
Episode One stars Fern Dodelbach, the “nittiest” wit of all, who must call on her intervention skills to persuade her guy-crazy roommate Kimi to lay off bad men. But what is really going on behind closed doors? Is Kimi using her room to turn tricks?
Love, hunger, and financial meltdown await Fern and her friends in the City of Light, where it’s harder to raise cash than it is to raise heck. Will Fern’s loyalty and romantic dreams survive the riot girls, a much-sought-after chamber pot, and the incident of the flying falsie?
If you like your comedy seasoned with romance, mystery, and the occasional groan-worthy pun, “chick out” this new release.

Reviewer’s Thoughts:

This book has no point other than to be fun.  There is a plot and there are interesting characters but the focus is neither plot development nor character growth.  Instead, Paris Brats starts out running and never slows down.  Within the first few lines we know that Fern, our main brat, is on one wild ride.  She can recall that she “might have slept with the cute guy, and he might have been the groom.”

Much of the novella reads like a TV show, I could visualize everything.  The dialogue is short, snappy and funny- very much like a sitcom.  Fern, the roommates’ source of financial support, is cut off and her half-sister takes on the Herculean task of figuring out a legal way for Fern to make money.  Each character, four roommates living in Paris, has a distinctive voice; which is admirable considering how short this novella is. My main complaint is that just as I was starting to get into the book it ended.  And I was disappointed because I wanted to read more.  What happens next?
Paris Brats is the beginning of a series and while I enjoyed reading the first installment it felt abbreviated.  I love the idea of a sitcom type book but the reality is a bit disappointing, especially when you want to settle in with a story.  Oh yeah and the romance, we haven’t gotten there yet.  Episode one is just an introduction not the full story.  Unfortunately, you have to wait for the next episode.  Fortunately, there are three roommates left whose stories need to be told so
bring on episode number two.
